A collection of hand-crafted furniture and objects conceived and made by the Swedish designer Mia Lagerman, THEM OBJECTS explores new typologies based around classic references and a desire to question perceived truths.
Understated yet expressive, THEM OBJECTS play with proportions and materials, rigorous forms and organic details, to make something joyful and useful.
BUCKETS
Reinterpreting the most basic of objects, BUCKETS combine a raw industrial material with the simplest of expressions. Made in Corten steel for use outdoors as planters or receptacles for wood or tools, BUCKETS 1, 2, 3 are both archetypal and original. On their own they stand their ground, but show their character even more when grouped together.
BUCKETS originate from Five Buckets, an exhibition piece addressing the theme of how objects can bring people together – like water buckets to a well – created for the 2017 Cabinetmakers Autumn Exhibition and bought by the Danish Arts Foundation.
OPEN SHELF
A shelf reduced to its essence, OPEN SHELF is defined by its construction, simple pieces of Oregon pine paired with glass bring a sense of solidity and transparency.
Designed to be hung on the wall or freestanding, it is unadorned yet enlivened by the grain and natural warmth of the Oregon pine.
CABINET COLLECTION
Begun as an experimental project, the cabinets combine traditional craft with a contemporary sensibility.
They all sport the same wooden frame, glass and mirror shelves as well as the elegant proportions from which they evolved.
RATTAN CABINET
Created as an exercise in contrasting form and materiality, RATTAN CABINET is a design piece that speaks its own language. A cabinet without doors, sides or back with rigour from its wooden frame and organic refinement from the crafted rattan.
Made by master Swedish crafts people, RATTAN CABINET is informed by its Swedish heritage from the brightly coloured painted wood to the natural rattan. Yet it also has a Mediterranean sensibility and whimsy, accentuated by the glass and mirror shelves.
CANVAS CABINET
An experimental project at its inception, CANVAS CABINET is a design piece with elegant proportions on tall legs, informed by textile properties and its Swedish heritage. Originally designed as a home office, Canvas Cabinet hides its content behind slightly translucent fabric doors.
CANVAS CABINET originate from an exhibition piece made for the 2014 Cabinetmakers’ Exhibition in Copenhagen.
FRUIT CABINET
The idiosyncratic Fruit Cabinet is embellished with colourful and familiar images referencing motifs from throughout the 1900s, so simplified they look like emojis.
Using stained glass, a traditional craft of joining pieces of glass to create a decorative effect, the Fruit Cabinet explores the clash between the aesthetics and the materials and eras - how well known elements, when mixed, can create something interesting.
Honest and architectural, useful but not utilitarian.
